The role
This is a newly created role, established to formalise and elevate the data engineering capability within our growing Data & Analytics function.
The Data Engineering Manager leads the Data Engineering sub-team, responsible for delivering curated, reusable data products and a governed semantic layer that serves both the business and the AI team. The role holds ownership of the data platform, ingestion pipelines, and databases that underpin these capabilities — ensuring they are robust, scalable, and fit for purpose.
As the end-to-end owner of the data product lifecycle, the Data Engineering Manager brings both strategic vision and technical rigour to the role. You will lead and develop a team of analytics and data engineers, establish and uphold engineering standards across the data domain, and champion the adoption and reuse of data products, AI semantics, and data agents across the Data & Analytics and AI teams.
This is an exciting opportunity to shape a function from the ground up — defining how data engineering is practised, how data products are built and governed, and how engineering excellence is embedded into the fabric of the organisation's data and AI ambitions.
What you will be doing
Key Responsibilities:
- Own the data product lifecycle end-to-end demand intake, design, build, publish, versioning, documentation and retirement delivering curated, reusable data products to the business and AI team.
- Deliver analytics engineering and the semantic layer, producing semantically defined datasets and AI semantics that power data products, reporting and data agents.
- Drive adoption and reuse of data products, measured by consumption, reuse across use cases, and reduction in bespoke extracts and one-off reporting.
- Publish productionised, contracted datasets, semantics and data agents for the AI team to build on, with clear ownership, service levels and documentation.
- Own the data platform end-to-end Snowflake, Ataccama, ingestion pipelines and database management covering reliability, performance, cost, vendor and licensing, compliance, backup and disaster recovery, upgrades and capacity.
- Own data ingestion and pipeline engineering across structured and unstructured sources, ensuring data is landed, transformed and available reliably at scale.
- Lead and develop the data engineering team, setting engineering standards, ways of working and technical direction, and running delivery across the data product and platform portfolio.
- Drive adoption of AI-assisted tooling within the engineering practice to automate delivery and operations, and stay across emerging technologies and platform roadmaps, recommending investments aligned to the Data & AI strategy.
- Execute data governance across the data domain including data quality, master data and curation and manage the operational interface with GPT's Data and AI partner.
What makes you stand out
You are an experienced data and analytics engineering leader with a proven track record of delivering production-grade data products, governed semantic layers and robust cloud data platforms. You combine deep technical credibility with the people leadership and stakeholder skills to drive a growing engineering capability forward.
- Proven end-to-end data product delivery — from demand intake and design through to catalogue publishing and retirement
- Strong engineering foundations across ingestion, pipelines, semantic layer development and cloud data platform ownership
- Full-service platform accountability — reliability, performance, cost, compliance and lifecycle management
- Fluency in applying AI tooling to accelerate delivery and operations
- The ability to balance a portfolio of product, platform and engineering initiatives against run-and-operate demands
- Strong relationship-building and communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Eight or more years across data and analytics engineering, with at least two to three years leading engineering teams in production
- Degree in a technical or quantitative discipline preferred; cloud platform certifications valued but not essential
